FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs

I've just started as a contractor on a day rate, can I get a mortgage?

Yes. Many contractors assume they can't, but specialist lenders are used to assessing day-rate income and often just need your contract details rather than years of accounts.

When's the right time to contact a broker?

As soon as you start thinking about it. A good time is when your current deal is around 7 months from ending, so we can start tracking the market on your behalf. Our brokers monitor rates right up until the day before your deal ends and, if a better one comes along, we'll switch you to it, so you're never paying more than you need to and always have peace of mind. If you're buying a new home, it's best to speak to us before you start viewing properties. We can get you a Decision in Principle in place, putting you in a stronger position as a buyer and helping you move faster when you find the right home.

Do I need to be self-employed?

No. We help contractors, sole traders, limited company directors and PAYE umbrella workers alike, whatever your setup, we know how to present it to lenders.

What information will you need?

Just the basics to start: ID, proof of address, and details of your income and outgoings. If you're a contractor, this usually includes your current contract or day rate details. We'll guide you through anything else as we go, so it's far less daunting than it sounds.

How much could I borrow?

It depends on your income and circumstances, but contractor income is often assessed more generously than a quick online calculator suggests, although it can give you a guide. Get in touch with one of our specialist brokers for an accurate figure based on your individual circumstances.

I've only got a short contract or trading history, is that a problem?

Not necessarily. Some lenders will still consider you, especially if you have relevant experience in the same line of work beforehand, or a solid history of contract renewals. It's worth having a conversation with us rather than ruling yourself out.

How quickly can I find out what I can borrow?

Usually within a 30 minute phone call, we can typically get you a Decision in Principle fast, which helps if you're up against other buyers. We charge no upfront fees for having a conversation with a broker, so there's nothing to lose by finding out where you stand.

Do you only look at high-street lenders?

No. We're independent, directly regulated by the FCA, and have access to the whole market, including exclusive deals for contractors and umbrella workers that you won't find on the high street or through a single lender alone.

Can you help me if I alreadfy have a mortgage?

Yes, we can help you with your re-mortgage process. Even if you're tied in, it's still often worth a conversation with our brokers to understand the best option for you. Signing up for our free mortgage market tracker will also keep you updated on the best deals in the market for you.

FAQs

Can I really use my business credit card?

Yes. BoostPay Flex accepts Corpay, American Express and all major business cards as a funding method for a wide range of business payments, including contractor and worker payroll, supplier invoices, and payments to HMRC. This isn't something most payment providers offer. BoostPay has built Flex to make it possible.

Will I earn Membership Rewards points on Flex payments?

That depends on your business credit card and its rewards structure. In most cases, Flex payments are processed as standard business expenditure, which means they're treated the same as any other card transaction for rewards purposes. We'd recommend confirming with your business credit directly, as card terms vary.

What business credit cards does Flex accept?

Flex works with all major business credit cards including Corpay and American Express. If you're unsure whether your specific card is compatible, the BoostPay team can confirm before you set anything up.

Why use my business credit card instead of bank transfers?

Bank transfers draw immediately on your cash. Paying through your business credit card means the cash stays in your account until your card statement is due, giving you additional time to manage your working capital without delaying payments to workers, suppliers, or HMRC. For businesses juggling multiple payment obligations at once, that difference in timing can be significant.

Can I use Flex for my HMRC payments?

Yes. Flex can be used to fund business payments to HMRC, which makes it a useful tool around tax deadlines when cash flow is under particular pressure. Speak to the BoostPay team about how this works in practice for your specific payment obligations.

Does BoostPay charge extra for payments made by business credit card?

Speak to the BoostPay team about the current fee structure for Flex. Pricing is discussed as part of the onboarding conversation so you have a clear picture before committing.

What happens when I register?

Before any client is set up on Flex, we carry out our own know your customer (KYC) checks. This includes verifying the identity of the business and its directors, confirming registered company details against Companies House records, and checking ownership structure where relevant. These checks sit alongside, and are separate from, the KYC checks already carried out by the card provider and our banking partners when a card or account is issued.

Do you have a compliance process to check payments?

We run anti-money laundering checks on every client as part of onboarding and on an ongoing basis. This includes screening against sanctions and politically exposed persons lists, monitoring transaction patterns for anything unusual, and reviewing accounts periodically rather than only at the point of setup. These checks are additional to the AML controls already applied by your card provider and our bank.

What is your compliance process?

Compliance runs through everything we do at BoostPay, not just at onboarding. Our compliance process including KYC and AML is layered on top of the checks already carried out by the card provider and our bank.
